Amazing performance of U320-RX array with Linux kernel 2.6.6

Throughput rates of over 460 MB/sec. possible.

Huge Systems has announced impressive performance results for its U320-RX RAID array when mated with applications running the recently released Linux 2.6.6 kernel.

Huge Systems tested a U320-RX dual channel U320 SCSI array in RAID3@2k mode with a desktop workstation running the latest Linux operating system. Configured with an Intel Westville motherboard, using an onboard Adaptec dual channel U320 chip set, a standard LMDD benchmark produced a read rate of over 460 MB/sec. and a write rate of over 380 MB/sec.

"This is the fastest kernel we've ever measured," said Mike Anderson, CTO for Huge Systems. "At 460 Megabytes per second, a U320-RX connected to a system running Linux 2.6.6 is more than twice as fast as standard Windows XP in an equivalent configuration. These results give Linux users another compelling reason to look to Huge Systems for high performance storage solutions for an array of applications."

Huge Systems expects that the new U320-RX will gain the same notoriety that it's other products have earned from both users and the media. Bob Turner, Technical Editor with Video Systems magazine, recently awarded Huge System’s SANStream GB Ethernet storage array that is based on this new Linux kernel, a Making the Cut award following the product’s first showing at the 2004 NAB expo.

Anderson concludes, “We will of course continue to support all our Mac and Windows-based users, as we always have. But the availability of such impressive read/write rates for a Linux-based system makes the MediaVault U-320 RX Dual Max a compelling option. We look forward to users in the Linux arena discovering what is possible with Huge Systems.”

About MediaVault U320-RX

The MediaVault U320-RX is optimized for non-linear video editing, content creation and delivery applications.  In its Dual Max configuration, the U320-RX offers up to 2.5 TBytes of storage capacity (in RAID0 mode) and supports up to two U320 SCSI channels.

The array is designed to be flexible, it can be configured to operate in either stripped (RAID0) mode for performance, or RAID3 mode for fault-tolerance.  Also, it's attractive enclosure comes with accessories to enable desktop or rack mount use.

In addition to the RAID3 fault-tolerant mode, the reliability and maintainability of the array is further enhanced by ten hot-swap caddies supporting back ground reconstruction, and dual hot swappable power supplies.

These features ensure that the array offers high availability and is easy to maintain.  This makes the array perfect for content delivery and today's production environment where timescales are always shrinking and reliability is a key purchasing decision.

The MediaVault U320-RX list prices start at £4806, with units available offering pricing as low as £2.80 per Gbyte.
